I love writing communications for businesses and I love reading too – so I thought I’d combine some of my favourite quotes about writing and communications. These all inspire me to keep writing:
- The single biggest problem in communication is the illusion that it has taken place. (George Bernard Shaw)
- The two words information and communication are often used interchangeably, but they signify quite different things. Information is giving out; communication is getting through. (Sydney Harris)
- The difference between the right word and the almost right word is the difference between lightning and a lightning bug. (Mark Twain)
- The most important thing in communication is hearing what isn’t said. (Peter Drucker)
- Good communication is just as stimulating as black coffee, and just as hard to sleep after. (Anne Lindberg)
- Genius is the ability to put into effect what is on your mind. (Scott Fitzgerald)
- Communication is everyone’s panacea for everything. (Tom Peters)
- Brevity is the soul of wit. (William Shakespeare)
- Who you are is speaking so loudly that I can’t hear what you are saying. (Ralph Waldo Emerson)
- If you have an important point to make, don’t try to be subtle or clever. Use a pile driver. Hit the point once. Then come back and hit it again. Then hit it a third time – a tremendous whack. (Winston Churchill)
- Don’t use words too big for the subject. Don’t say infinitely when you mean very; otherwise you’ll have no words left when you want to talk about something really infinite. (C.S. Lewis)
- Writing is easy – all you have to do is cross out he wrong words. (Mark Twain)
- Making the simple complicated is commonplace: making thecomplicated simple, awesomely simple, that’s creativity. (Charles Mingus)
- Things do not happen. Things are made to happen. (John F. Kennedy)
- A story has its purpose and its path. It must be told correctly for it to be understood. (Marcus Sedgwick)
- A picture can tell a thousand words, but a few words can change its story. (Sebastyne Young)
- Words are, of course, the most powerful drug used by mankind. (Rudyard Kipling)
- Words can be like X-rays if you use them properly — they’ll go through anything. You read and you’re pierced. (Aldous Huxley)
- You can fix anything but a blank page. (Nora Roberts)
- It usually takes me more than three weeks to prepare a good impromptu speech. (Mark Twain)
